May starts next week and the end of the year is furiously approaching.  Please look for any books that need to come back to OMS, whether library or classroom teachers.

This is also a reminder that if you are able, payment for the field trip can be made via Infinite Campus.  We are grateful for any additional donations made via check to OMS if you are able to help defray the cost for others.  Thank you!

We are almost done with our book club unit focusing on overcoming obstacles and who gets to have the American Dream.  We looked at college spending, the US prison system, how to fill out a job application, and also whether scholars could make it through a month living paycheck to paycheck with the obstacles that may occur.  It has been wonderful to see the growth in kids’ thinking, discussion skills, and thoughts about the world.

Deadlines:

  • 6th reading goal due May 13th

  • Read 2 hours + every week

  • Be prepared for discussion

  • Text analysis project due May 4th

  • 3rd block: Final Vocab quiz May 6th

Questions to ask:

  • What are components of a general job application?

  • Who influences you?

  • How did you grow in your book club discussion?

  • What did you choose to do for your text analysis project?

  • Did you make it through the month?

We are wrapping up our Overcoming Obstacles Book Club Unit.  Your student has significant work to be completed over the coming week and a half.  They need to complete their book by the end of this week as well as complete their final graded discussion with me.  Additionally, students need to complete their Choice Board Assignment - also a grade assignment.  There is still the continuing expectation/assignment that students complete at least 20 minutes of Independent Reading outside of class.

Geography

(Stoller)

We wrapped up our unit on the European Union this week and will be spending time preparing for Urban Challenge.  In Geography class, we will work with our teams as we plan our day, learn how to ride the Metro and even participate in a Mock Urban Challenge at OMS.

Questions:

  • What is the EU?  What are the advantages of membership?

  • How is the EU different from NATO?

  • Who is on your Urban Challenge team?

  • What are you doing to be a positive group member?

  • What are some activities you have done to help prepare for the day?
