We finished our poetry unit, for the most part, today, with just a few poems missing from some scholars  I hope scholars have been exposed to a lot of poetry and also different ways of creating poetry.  The focus on the poetry unit has been three-fold: a better understanding of literary terms such as metaphor and anaphora, the ability to analyze a text (a key skill for 8th grade and beyond), and the creation of poetry in different formats.  Next week we will be doing end-of-quarter learning, and getting ready for after spring break and the final quarter.

Please look for any books that are at home,  if you would like to donate a lost book to our classroom, please see this wishlist.

Deadlines:

  • 5th reading goal due April 1st

  • Read 2 hours + every week

  • How-to speech due Wednesday, March 16th (will be introduced Monday)

Questions to ask:

  • Did the right poem win our poetry face-off?

  • Which poem are you the proudest of and why?

  • What is new learning you got through this unit?

  • What are you hoping to do the rest of the year in English?

We are rapidly approaching the end of our Poetry Unit.  The focus on the Poetry unit has been three-fold: a better understanding of literary terms such as metaphor and simile, the ability to analyze a text (a key skill for 8th grade and beyond), and the creation of poetry in different forms.  This week and next your student will be putting a portfolio of their work that will culminate in the Unit’s grade.

Remember, students still should be reading at least 20 minutes of night outside of class.  This independent reading is one of the best indicators of your student’s future success in 8th grade and beyond.

Geography

(Stoller)

We wrapped up our learning about Darfur and genocide and conflict.  We will take that to a new unit about apartheid in South Africa and learning about Nelson Mandela.  We have started watching Invictus and will wrap it up next week.

Questions:

  • What is the root of virtually all conflict?  How does that play out in various settings?  School, home, between countries….

  • Is there an ‘end’ to the conflict in Darfur?  If not, what do you think should be done?

  • What do you know about aprtheid?  How is it similar or different from segregation?

  • What was Mandela’s interest in rugby during the 1994-1995 season?
