Newsletter September 10th, 2021

With a second week under our belt, we are feeling like we are getting to know our scholars better.  Classes have been filled with discussions, hands-on activities and some outside work as well.  You will see that start to increase as larger projects get underway.

If a scholar is missing school for some reason, they should check in with their teachers, as well as check Google Classroom.  All teachers will post the work they should do if they miss a day and they are able to do work.

Quick things to know:

  • GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance) starts meeting on September 14th in Mrs. Ripp’s classroom during lunch.  Her email is psripp@oregonsd.net

  • Homework club starts Tuesday, September 7th from 4 to 5 PM with Mrs. Gilbert.  More information will be shared with scholars but it will run every Tuesday and Thursday 4 PM to 5 PM - no sign up needed.

  • OMS has a late bus that scholars can sign up for if they go to homework club or stay late for other school purposes.

Quick links to help:

COVID vaccines are now available for 12-15-year-olds in Wisconsin.  Click this link here to easily sign your scholar up if you want.

Counselors’ Corner

(Severson)

English
(Ripp)

We went to the library this week and dove into our storytelling kits.  All year we will focus on oral storytelling before we write in order to think of ways we can expand our notion of writing as well as take creative risks.  We also discussed permission vs consent, who holds the power and how do we reclaim power, and shared stories about ourselves.

You will slowly start to see grades get posted for English.  Many of them, in the beginning, are for formative work as we start to practice the skills we are learning.  So if your scholar receives a “1” for a formative grade, do not panic, we are just getting started and will continue to spiral back to the learning throughout the quarter.  Overall, you will typically see fewer grades in English because we do larger projects.

Deadlines:

  • Students should read at least 2 hours outside of English - this is due every Monday.

  • First reading goal due October 15th.  (Self-selected and checked by Mrs. Ripp)

  • Scholastic book order due Monday - thank you for your support

Questions to ask:

  • How did independent reading go?

  • What stories did you tell?

  • What did you add to your identity jamboard?

  • What is the difference between consent and permission?

  • What do you need to feel safe in our classroom?

  • Whose stories did you learn about in Humans of New York?

While we still continue to look at identity as we read texts as well as discuss classroom procedures and expectations, I have focused mini lessons this week on making powerful inferences.  In the coming days, we, as a class, will be working on a “How to….” writing assignment.  The goal of this assignment will be the importance of organizing one’s thoughts as well as clarity and precision of language.

Independent Reading seems to be going very well.  Please continue to have your student read at home (20 minutes a night).

We continue to learn about one another and what we will be doing in Geography this year.  One of our long term assignments each quarter is a Current Event.  Each learner has a different due date and is responsible for knowing their date.  We also reviewed the syllabus for this year.  Please ask your learner to show you in Google Classroom.
