Newsletter September 25th, 2020

Thank you so much to those who were able to show up for the virtual Q & A event we held on Tuesday evening.  If you missed it, we have a link to the recording right here.

We appreciate the great questions and support from all of you as we continue to build our learning adventure with your scholar.  It has been fun to see students get more active through their participation as they get more comfortable with virtual learning.

We know that virtual school is presenting a lot of challenges.  Whether your scholar is overwhelmed or feeling like it is moving too slow, please know that we are working dilligently trying to navigate this new territory and to create an experience that is engaging, challenging, and sustainable for many different needs and abilities.  Please continue to reach out with feedback and questions.  While we may have had 3 weeks of school, we are really just entering the second week of school if this were a regular school year.

If you would like access to your scholar’s Google Classroom, please email one of their teachers.  Once you have been invited by one teacher and you accept, you will be automatically added to all of their Classroom.  As a guardian, you will get a weekly summary report of assignments and whether or not assignments were turned in.

Weekly missing assignment reports will be sent out on Tuesdays instead of Fridays to be more up-to-date.  You should be receiving this report from your scholar’s connections teacher if you requested it during your Ready-Set-Go conference.  If you do not receive a report for a week it means your scholar has no missing work and should just focus on the current work that is assigned.

If you have a few minutes, visit the Counselors' Corner by clicking on the link! There you will meet your school counselors, learn about OMS's Zones of Regulation, and be able to visit the Counselors' Group Room where there will be new topics added each month AND times for synchronous meetings announced where you can learn more about the topic in a live session! Our current topic is Calming Strategies and Mindfulness. Be on the lookout for our next Group Room topic coming soon...Getting and Staying Organized!

Many 7th graders have been meeting with me in small groups for help in the afternoon. That is wonderful! This week, all of the meetings will take place from 2-2:30. Students who have missing work or need help on the classwork have told me they've found it helpful to come to these meetings. For grading: I have made a change that I hope will make it easier to understand what is missing or turned in. Namely, students will see one assignment missing/turned in and comments on what needs to be completed to be marked as turned in. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns! Students are doing an amazing job of learning how to complete their assignments, so keep reaching out!
