We continue to finetune our virtual lessons and asynchronous work so if you have feedback for us please reach out and share it. The district will also be sending out a survey soon to hear how things are going but we know we will only be stronger together.
Some of our scholars have a lot of missing work. While we send out missing assignment reports, it can feel insurmountable as the work piles up. Please let us know how we can support you. Remember that there is still an expectation for work in the afternoon; just like in the spring, there is an expectation for asynchronous work and students will likely be working most of a school day, including Wednesdays.
It is a great idea to check Infinite Campus together at least once a week if you aren’t already doing so with your scholar. Teachers do their best to update Infinite Campus regularly. Please know that just because your student has ‘submitted’ something in Google Classroom, the teacher does needs time to assess it. Once a teacher assesses a particular assignment in the first round, any missing work will take additional time to assess and be updated in IC. Just like when we are in person, there is a delay between handing something in and seeing a posted grade. If your learner is saying that something has been submitted, you can ask them to show you the assignment on Google Classroom so that you can verify that it is complete and then await the grade update in IC. If there is a question about that, wait 48 hours and then have your learner email the teacher to check about a particular assignment if nothing has been updated.
Things to know:
Next virtual Q and A will be October 13th at 5:30 PM
The end of quarter 1 is October 28th

Counselor’s Corner | The switch to online learning is presenting many new challenges for all of us - families, educators, and especially our learners! One of the greatest challenges for educators right now is how we work to incorporate the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) that happens more naturally within brick and mortar classrooms as we know this is critical to adolescent brain development and learning. How we provide this while also giving students the opportunity to engage in challenging, meaningful academic curriculum has been and will continue to be a work in progress. What we do know is that it is important for our young people to see and interact with each other as humans and that we need to facilitate as many opportunities as possible for them to do this in the virtual learning world. It is not only important for their mental health, but it is also vital to their brain development. For more information about how SEL supports brain development and learning, check out this article that I have found helpful as a parent of both a middle school and high school student. It may help you to make sense of why your child suddenly jumps up from their learning space with the need to wrangle the family pet, grab a funny or find an object that is meaningful to them.
Please continue to reach out to your child’s teachers for support and feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or to schedule a time to check in. I’m happy to help support our OMS learners and their families in any way possible! Be well ~ Kit Laibly, School Counselor kjlaibly@oregonsd.net |
