Newsletter February 28th, 2020

Student-Led Conferences will be in April with your learners’ Connections teacher.  In 7-O they take the shape of an interview where students will interview with you for the job of 8th-grade student.  More information and sign up information will be shared later in March.

Save the date... the OMS Art Show will be held the evening of Tuesday, April 28th.

Now is a great time to check in on supplies, particularly pencils.  Does your learner have enough pencils to do their work? Erasers? Anything else they need to be successful.

English - Ripp:
Deadlines - None, all TED talks components should be submitted

Students pulled through and gave their TED talks this week and are ready to take a deep breath and have some fun with poetry.  We will be exploring the question; what is poetry for the next week and welcome David Daniels, Lead Actor extraordinaire from APT into our classroom the week of the 9th.

If you are curious how much your learner is reading, ask them to show you their reading data, they record books read throughout the year and set goals for themselves for their independent reading weekly.  They should be reading at least 2 hours outside of English a week in a self-selected book.

Questions to ask:
How did your TED talk go?
How did your audience react?
May I see your TED talk - all videos of speakers are accessible in Google Classroom.
What did you learn from this experience?
Who was Henrietta Lacks?  Shirley Chisholm? James Baldwin?
What did the Black Panther Party do?  What are HBCU’s?

English - Gunst

We are wrapping up our TED Talk unit this week.  Have seen some excellent presentations. Be sure to ask your student about their presentation.  We will work on poetry next week as well as revise their TED Talk essays.

Science - Krucas

Students completed the sheep eye dissection this week! As a result of the dissection, they should be able to identify 11 different parts of the eye and explain how the parts work together to produce vision. They also wrapped up the nervous system unit by taking the unit test.
Deadlines: Retakes for the nervous system unit test are due by March 16th.

Questions to ask:
How did the dissection go?
Was there anything that surprised you about the eye?
What is the job that the nervous system does for our body?

Spanish (Landsverk):
As grades are coming in, students should be checking Infinite Campus. If students are looking to retake the vocabulary quiz, retake slips should come to me before the end of the week. We still have a conjugation quiz this Friday and Monday. Students may practice with the links on their Slideshow for Unit 3. Gracias.

Orchestra
Twenty-one String/Piano entries from OMS Orchestra classes are attending the District Solo and Ensemble this Saturday at Verona Area High School. We wish all of our musicians from OMS Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Music a wonderful experience as they present their music learning to expert adjudicators.

Students took their first formative assessment in syncopated rhythms this week. We are currently studying a piece that was written by Lawrence University Professor of Music Matt Turner titled "Eastside Boogaloo". The genre of "boogaloo" developed in the 1960's and was a mix of Latin rhythms and American rock styles that musicologists sometimes claim was the predecessor to Salsa.

Questions to ask:
Which current pop/hip hop artist used the 1967 boogaloo hit "I Like It Like That" by Pete Rodriguez in her song by the same name (we listened to the Rodriguez version in school!)?

What is a rhythmic aspect of Latin inspired music? (begins with "s")

What note value do you count continuously in "Eastside Boogaloo"?

Band - Jaeger/Dorn
The second concert of the year is this upcoming Tuesday, March 3rd. Students need to arrive to the OHS band room by 6:15 p.m. that night for warm up and tuning, and the concert begins at 7 p.m. The concert will last about 60 minutes. Concert attire is black dress clothes and shoes. If students do not have black, dark colored dress clothes or any clothes they feel like they are presenting themselves as a young professional in are just fine. Concert black is just a guideline to shoot for. Please contact me if any assistance is needed, or if you have any questions.

If you can avoid scheduling appointments for the morning of the 3rd during their dress rehearsal (9am-11:15am), please do. This is the only time that all three large groups of 7th graders will meet together before their concert that night. There are a lot of logistics that change when all of the kids are together at once in a completely different performance space. Thanks! We look forward to seeing you at the concert that evening at 7:00 p.m. in the PAC.

Congratulations to all students who performed at Solo/Ensemble Festival at Verona HS on Saturday! It was a great day of community and demonstration of student learning.

Ask your student what an "epiphany" is, and how composers can portray this musically.

Health - Hartberg:
Deadlines - Learning Styles Inventory (On Google Classroom) - Due 2/26/20.
Upcoming Next week - ACT NOW Bullying Software Journal and Post Test - Due Tuesday 3/3/20

Students worked to explore deeper into "WHO AM I?" by looking at emotional wellness as part of the 7 dimensions of wellness. They continued that journey by looking at learning styles and preferences in learning to apply those skills to everyday life.  Ask them about what they learned and how they can bring those powers to the world in everyday life. It's not "How smart am I?" it's "HOW am I SMART?"

Questions to ask:
What was your learning style or type of intelligence that you uncovered?  "HOW are your SMART?"
What skills can you use in your life according to the results?
How can you apply this to life situations to improve your health status on health scale 0-10?
What did you learn and change about yourself from this experience?

Geography (Stoller):
We wrapped up religions and did our Asia Maps quiz this week.  We just began learning about OPEC and how the price of oil affects our daily lives.  We will have mini units next week on Taxes and Supply/Demand. Quiz to come.
*What are four countries and their capitals in Asia and where are they?
*What are three physical features of Asia?
* What does OPEC stand for?  What do they do?
*How does the price of oil affect your daily life?  Why?

Math - Gratzl:
Deadlines:
What Do You Expect Quiz on Thursday, March 5th
Moving Straight Ahead Test Corrections Due Friday, March 6th

Questions to ask:
-What is experimental probability?
-What have you learned about flipping a coin?
-What are equally likely outcomes?  What would be an example of equally likely outcomes?

Calculators:
-There was an error made on the school supply list regarding calculators for 7th graders.  A calculator was supposed to be on the supply list. In math, we have been using a class set of calculators, but while they are numbered and assigned to students, some have not returned from the last time we used them.  If your kid does have their own calculator, please encourage them to bring it to math. If your kid does not have a calculator and you are interested in picking one up, they will need a calculator in 8th grade (they suggest TI-30X).  If your kid does not have a calculator, and you would rather wait to get one until 8th grade, I will have enough to go through the school year provided they do not continue to go missing. If you have any questions please let me know.

Resources:

German - Wochenske:
