Newsletter February 16th, 2020

A reminder than course selection forms for 8th grade needs to be returned.  If your learner lost theirs, a new one can be found here.  Please submit it ASAP.

Save the date... the OMS Art Show will be held the evening of Tuesday, April 28th.

No school for our learners February 14th and 17th.

Now is a great time to check in on supplies, particularly pencils.  Does your learner have enough pencils to do their work? Erasers? Anything else they need to be successful.

English - Ripp:
Deadlines:
Module 4 - notes - due Tuesday night
Module 5 due Wednesday night

Why must you always check your selected sources for bias and reliability?
Which examples of Black excellence have we studied?
What is Juneteenth?
What are you reading?

 Spanish (Landsverk):
Students who have turned in their retake slips should come by with their pass to retake this week. All students should continue to study their vocabulary on Quizlet as well as conjugation for both quizzes at the end of the month. Gracias!

Orchestra
Congratulations to all 7th grade orchestra musicians on a beautiful concert! You worked very hard and showed tremendous growth.
After celebrating our learning a bit, we will do some "housekeeping" (turning in music and reorganizing our music folders). Next week we will begin digging in to our "Rhythm and Groove" collaboration with OHS orchestra classes and guest artist, Katie Ernst.
Questions to ask:
What contributes to a successful performance?
How can I continue to do my best work in orchestra?

Upcoming events:
Feb. 29 District Solo and Ensemble at Verona Area High School (optional)
March 20 Artist in Residence Katie Ernst (2nd clinic)
May 11 Spring Orchestra "Rhythm and Groove" Concert with/at OHS with OHS orchestras and Katie Ernst

Band - Jaeger
We are continuing our solo/ensemble unit, where students have been studying in solos or small groups. Please encourage students to practice regularly at home, as their performances are during the week of 2/24-29. Students who opted to go to festival will be receiving more information on the site and time in the next few days. As soon as we receive them, we will share them with students and families.

Ask your student: What aspects of your performance are you focusing on right now? What are the next steps to take on your checklist?

Math - Gratzl
Deadlines:
Moving Straight Ahead Quiz Corrections Due Date moved to Friday, February 21st
Moving Straight Ahead Test will be on Thursday, February 20th

Questions to ask:
-What do you need to study for your math test?  Are there specific questions you need to ask Mrs. Gratzl?
-What is the slope and y-intercept if the equation is y = 2x + 4?

Calculators:
-There was an error made on the school supply list regarding calculators for 7th graders.  A calculator was supposed to be on the supply list. In math, we have been using a class set of calculators, but while they are numbered and assigned to students, some have not returned from the last time we used them.  If your kid does have their own calculator, please encourage them to bring it to math. If your kid does not have a calculator and you are interested in picking one up, they will need a calculator in 8th grade (they suggest TI-30X).  If your kid does not have a calculator, and you would rather wait to get one until 8th grade, I will have enough to go through the school year provided they do not continue to go missing. If you have any questions please let me know.

Resources:

Geography (Stoller):
Our Religion Quiz continues to get pushed back as we dive deeper into the question of conflict in the Middle East.  Our Current Event presentations are also really good so we are taking more time to discuss the issues brought forth by students.  Our quiz will be next week.

*Why does each group think it is the rightful owner of the land?
*What was the analogy we used in class to think about what this might be like in Wisconsin?
