Newsletter November 15th, 2019

Thank you to all who were able to come to conferences, we appreciate the conversations we had, as well as our continued partnership.  If you could not make it but would like to meet, please reach out! We are flexible and will set up a phone call, meeting, or even come to you if needed.
What's the difference in our communication tools?
  • The homework blog is updated by our para daily but is typically only the 7-O team classes.
  • Infinite Campus is updated by all after assignments are handed in - this is a great place to see grades and missing work.
  • Google Classroom is used by many teachers as a way to provide instruction to students - this is a great place for your learner to walk you through what is happening in class.
  • This newsletter is anyone that will send Pernille their information for the work, it varies from week to week, but should give you a view into what we did this week and what is coming up.

We could use your help with our on-going fundraiser.  We collect Boxtops for Education but it looks a little different this year.  Please take a look at this overview that explains the two ways to help us earn money to be used for additional curricular items, scholarships and prizes.  We are grateful for your help and support!

English - Ripp
Deadlines:  We have rolling deadlines with the different modules, please check with your learner.

Questions to ask:
-  What is plagiarism?
-  How can you use Google search better?
-  Whose voices are being shared in your resources?
-  What is the real story of Thanksgiving?

English - Gunst.
This week we had three summative assessments as well as two formatives.  Please check Infinite Campus to see how your student is doing. As always, if a student gets less than a "3", they are welcome to discuss with me an opportunity to correct their mistakes and retake the assessment.  We looked at types of sentences as well as wrote a literary analysis of our Read Aloud novel. This upcoming week we are discussing other literary terms such as plot, theme, and symbolism. Your student has a significant summative assessment due on November 20.

Art - Touhey

Questions to ask:
-  Explain the ceramic processes of wedging, rolling a slab, slipping&scoring.
-  What types of textures are you creating for your ceramics project?

Choir:
Choir uniform shirts came home last week.  Please ask your singer if you haven't seen it yet!
Choir concert is Dec. 5 at 7:00 PM at the high school.  More info will come via email soon.
Dec. 6 is the optional caroling for the lighting of the Holiday tree in downtown Oregon.  Students are welcome to come sing some carols and then enjoy a hot dog/chili supper at the fire station.  5:30-7:30 pm

Stoller (Geography):
We continue to work on latitude/longitude and will have a quiz sometime next week.  From there, we will work on the 5 Themes of Geography.
Questions to ask:
*Why do we use latitude and longitude?
*What math concept is really similar to latitude/longitude?  What did you do in Geo class that was similar to something you do in Math class?
* What is the difference between latitude and longitude?
*Show me your Kurt the Cartographer definitions and let's go over them together.

Band - Jaeger/Dorn
The first concert of the year is this upcoming Thursday, November 21st. Students need to arrive to the OHS band room by 6:15 p.m. that night for warm up and tuning, and the concert begins at 7 p.m. It will last about 50-60 minutes. Concert attire is black dress clothes and shoes. If students do not have black, dark colored dress clothes or any clothes they feel like they are presenting themselves as a young professional in are just fine. Concert black is just a guideline to shoot for. Please contact me if any assistance is needed, or if you have any questions.

If you can avoid scheduling appointments for the morning of the 21st during their dress rehearsal (9am-11:15am), please do. This is the only time that all three large groups of 7th graders will meet together before their concert that night. There are a lot of logistics that change when all of the kids are together at once in a completely different performance space. Thanks! We look forward to seeing you at the concert that evening at 7:00 p.m. in the PAC.

Ask your student what parts of their learning are they most excited to present to you so far this year.

Spanish (Landsverk):

Thank you to everyone who came out to conferences, it was wonderful to meet you and reflect on our wonderful learners! If you did not get a chance to meet with me, feel free to reach out via email with any questions. Students should be reviewing three verbs: ser, tener, and ir for a quiz on the 25/26th. Students should also be studying Quizlet (vocab and questions/answers) 5-10 minutes a night in order to reach proficiency. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
