Newsletter September 18th, 2015

We are now entering week four of school and students have settled into a nice routine.  We are really excited about this group of sharks and thank you for your encouragement from home.  We would suggest that you begin making a weekly or maybe daily check of Infinite Campus to monitor your student’s progress.  Teachers are working hard to keep it updated so as to give you the best and most timely information possible.

Next week is Homecoming week!  Spirit days are:
Monday: 70s/80s/90s Day
Tuesday: Flip/Flop Day (teachers dress like students; students dress like teachers)
Wednesday: Hawaiian Day
Thursday: Red/Shark Shirt Day
Friday: Orange/Black Day
Dress code still applies on all days.

Friday, students are dismissed early to walk to the parade.  All staff walk downtown and remain throughout the parade.  After the parade, students who need the bus return to school.  Others go home with parents or walk home.  Go PANTHERS!

We are still looking for volunteers for our Urban Challenge.  The field trip will be on THursday, October 8.  Please email Ms. Gratzl at kmgratzl@oregonsd.net for more information.

Upcoming Deadlines and Projects:

  • September 21st - 24th Homecoming!
  • September 22nd - Superhero speeches (Ripp)
  • September 28th - Math Quiz (Gratzl)
  • September 28th - Science test (Spaeth)
  • September 28th - Ender's Game, Make-a-Claim Writing Assignment (Westrich English)

Ask Your Child About:

Geography (Stoller):

  • Ask your child what (s)he should do when absent from school and/or how to get help when needed.  We spent a good deal of time this week looking at how to be successful in middle school and how to get the most out of this experience.
  • Next week, we dive into the 5 Themes of Geography, an organizational structure for all we will do this year.
Geography (Howe):
  • When will your child present their current event?  (Some start next Wednesday)
  • We are starting the 5 Themes of Geography unit next week
English (Ripp):
  • Who is their superhero?
  • Have they timed and practiced their speech?
  • What happened to the Jabberwocky?
Integrated Literacy:
  • How well did you participate in group discussion?
  • Did you bring new ideas?
  • Did you ask other group members questions?
Tech Tools:
Students have been reviewing the process of finding images legally. In google image search, they go to "Search Tools" and change the "Usage Rights" to "Labeled for Reuse".  Also, they have been learning to cite the images in easybib!  This is the beginning of learning how to use the MLA citation process!  They will continue this in middle school, high school, and college.

Students have also been practicing going to Infinite Campus.  They click on "Schedule" and then the name of the class to see if they have a grade or any feedback in the "Comments" section.  If they use Infinite Campus on their mobile device, they would go to "Assignments".  Please email me at jsh@oregonsd.net if you have any questions.
