Newsletter November 15th, 2014

It was wonderful to meet many of you Thursday and we hope to see more of you on Tuesday for conferences.  Please feel to bring your student to conferences as it helps to have his/her perspective when discussing progress.  If any of you missed conferences or if you need to speak further with any or all of us at any time during the year, we are available to set up team conferences during our planning time.  Just contact any of your child’s teachers to set up a time.

Don't forget that the OMS food drive is all next week!

Geography (Stoller):  Students wrapped up the introductory maps unit and had a summative assessment (quiz) on types of maps and map use.  We will move into latitude and longitude next week.  Some students struggle with this so please ask them to teach you how to do it.  That's a great way for them to solidify their skills.  Also, this is a good time to remember that students who grasp this concept easily should be going above and beyond toward the 4.  They can learn about things like time zones and how that fits with latitude and longitude.  They could find out how latitude and longitude is used by GPS programs and what further breakdown of units of measure there are.  There are a million possibilities; as long as it's related to latitude and longitude somehow, it's fair game.  They would need to do that learning on their own and then share that with me somehow.  Some students write me a short essay on their quiz.  Some create a presentation.  Some come in and talk to me about what they learned.  Students can come in and talk to me more in depth if they want to be sure they're on track for earning a 4.

Math (Stauss):
In math class this week we learned about the characteristics of similar figures and how to make similar figures on a coordinate grid.  Test corrections on our Accentuate the Negative unit are due on Friday, November 21st.  Next week we will identify scale factors, and use scale factors to find the missing sides of similar figures.

English (Ripp):
We had a busy week as we did our 4th vocabulary unit quiz; students have until Thanksgiving to re-take.  Students were also told that they can study ahead on the quizzes and take them before they are assigned.  This is another way for them to take control of their learning journey.  Our big second quarter project was also revealed; the non-fiction picture book.  Students have selected topics and we will be doing our first market research this coming week with Skype calls to kindergarten and 1st grade classes. This major project will due before winter break.

In independent reading we did our very first Mystery Skype.  I was very proud of the team work and collaboration the students had, even if it did take us a long time to guess the state right.
