Newsletter November 21, 2014

Happy Thanksgiving next week!  There is no school Wednesday, Thursday or Friday next week.  Enjoy the time off!  There will not be a newsletter next week because of the short week.

It was so wonderful to meet so many of you at conferences.  Please know that if you have concerns or would like an update, you can call or email any of us or request a team conference.  We’re happy to discuss your child’s progress.  Keeping track on Infinite Campus is a great tool for students and parents, as well, when it comes to making sure work is complete and proficient.  We suggest students redo any work that is not a 3.

Geography (Stoller):  Students wrapped up their mapping unit with a quiz on Latitude and Longitude today.  Next week, we will have a day to work on our e-portfolios and a special lesson by Ms. Brooks, our Edgewood practicum student.  The week we return, we will dive into our Asia unit.  We will begin by learning about the Middle East.  This often leads to some great discussions at home.  Be sure to ask your student about what they are learning!

Techtools
Students in Technology Tools class should be finishing their mini-research unit on Digital Netiquette on Friday.  During the last week in November and first week in December they will continue practicing finding images legally and citing their images in easybib.com.

Math (Stauss)
In math class this week we focused on identifying and using scale factors in different polygons.  Next week we will begin to review for our unit test on Stretching and Shrinking.  The test will be on Wednesday, December 3rd.  Students will need to complete corrections on this summative before winter break.

English (Ripp)
Students are busy researching their non-fiction picture books and a sense of urgency is sneaking in.  We only have 12 school days before they are due on December 15th.  Students will also haealso have their THIEVES sheets due on the 8th as well as another vocabulary quiz after Thanksgiving.

Part of taking ownership of their learning is that students can study ahead for any vocabulary quizzes and take them before they are assigned.  They have been given a handout of which standards they should master this quarter written in deconstructed language so they can understand what they need to master by January 22nd.  Yahara River Writers Contest is also coming up and will be a focus in December as well.
