Newsletter November 12th, 2021

 Homework:

As November continues, scholars have noticed that there seem to be more large projects going on in class which is leading to more outside of school work time, and while some work is expected outside of school, it should not be crushing them.  We also recognize that the last time scholars were in full-time school was 20 months ago.  It is a huge transition from 5th to 7th grade, one that is eased by the progress through 6th grade, however, due to the pandemic, scholars have not had as much of that transition of work expectations and time as they would have had otherwise.  We are very aware of this and trying to navigate how we best can help scholars achieve without overwhelming them.  If you see your scholar working for hours at night, please reach out.  We are learning alongside these kids and don’t want 7th grade to be an insurmountable challenge but a good challenge.

Fall Conferences: Fall conferences will continue on Tuesday, November 16.

These are drop-in conferences with no appointment necessary.

Families will be able to pick up copies of the report card and then visit with teachers of their choosing for five-minute conferences.

If you feel you need more than 5 minutes, please reach out to us to schedule a separate time.

We continue working on our inquiry unit diving into the many facets of reliability and bias and how to navigate sources to check if they are worth trusting.  I also wanted to send a positive shout-out to all of the kids.  Last week, I had pneumonia and was already scheduled to travel to Iceland as well, this meant we had a lot of different guest teachers in our space but the kids handled it really well.  I am grateful for their communication and resilience.

Deadlines:

  • Inquiry speech ready to go on the 19th

  • Read 2 hours+ outside of English

  • 2nd reading goal due 11/26/21

Questions to ask:

  • How can you determine whether a source is reliable or not

  • How can you check a source for bias and is a biased source always mean it is unreliable?

  • How far are you with your modules?

  • What are you reading right now?
