Newsletter February 26th, 2021

Hopefully, scholars are falling into a good routine as far as getting their asynchronous work under control and managing their time.  We are so proud of how scholars are showing up, reaching out, and pushing through their challenges.  Please let us know how we best can support you at home.

Things to know:

  • Teachers are structuring the workload to provide opportunities for students to be learning for all 5 days, 8:30-3:50.  We know that some students feel that they only need to work when they are with a teacher but the instruction is designed for students to be working during the asynchronous time.  It’s helpful if families revisit student schedules to look at setting up specific chunks of asynchronous time to learn in specific classes.

  • We will help students update settings in Google Classroom so that they do not receive an email every time a new assignment is posted.  That can fill their inbox and overwhelm them.  Please feel free to check in with them regarding their email and Google Classroom notification settings.

  • Connections is still a class - it happens Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 2:10 - 2:30 PM.

  • There will be a shark tank study hall every day from 2:30 to 3:30 PM - the Meet code will be Sharktank for students to get help from teachers.

  • Have technology issues?  Please send an email to the OSD tech helpdesk at helpdesk@oregonsd.net

This week we focused on checking sources for reliability.  With the advent of the internet, scholars need to be highly tuned into the difference between facts and opinions and what makes something a credible source.  We hope this week’s work is something that they can use for many years to come.

Deadlines:

  • Module 4 was due Wednesday

  • Module 5 is due Wednesday, March 3rd

  • 3 sources checked with the CRAAAP test due Wednesday, March 3rd

  • Reading 20 min a day and reading data survey due Friday

Questions to ask:

  • Who was Jean Michel Basquiat

  • Why do videos go viral?

  • What is the CRAAP test?

  • Do they have at least 3 reliable sources - how do they know?

We continue to move forward with our Research Inquiry/TED Talk Project.  By now, your student has chosen a research topic and has developed a claim that will be the starting point of their TED Talk presentation.  This week, your student is learning searching techniques to improve their research skills.  The goal for the end of the week is to find at least three sources that will be used in their presentation.

By March 1, your student should have completed the first five modules of the Research Inquiry/TED Talk Unit.  It would be great to ask your student what is the research question they are working on and what is their claim.

Additionally, your student should be continuing to read Independently every day for approximately 15 minutes.
