We started officially our dystopian book clubs this week, we are excited to kick off our first book club option for the year and are eager to have kids discussing great dystopian books with each other.  Dystopian themes are by their very nature a little more mature but it is always amazing to see scholars work through their messages, themes, as well as how we can spur social change.

Please see their meeting times for when your scholar should be discussing, this will be their main assessment throughout the unit and cannot be re-taken.  Some scholars have not started reading their book or not shown up for their discussion.

Deadlines:

  • Read 2+ hours every week in a book of your choosing

  • Complete the weekly dystopian assignments in Classroom by every Friday.

  • Weekly discussion at their selected time - primary assessment.

Questions to ask:

  • Do you have late work or work that needs to be re-taken in English?

  • How did your discussion go this week?

  • How are you tracking your thoughts and ideas in your book club book?

  • What are the characteristics of a dystopian society?

  • Are we living in a dystopia now?

Your scholars have started the Dystopian Book Club that will continue to Christmas Break.  The unit will require your student to read a lot.  By Sunday, your student should be AT LEAST one-third through their Dystopian Book.  Every Sunday, your student also has an assignment due tied to the reading.

Next week, I will be meeting with your scholar in a small group to discuss their reading.  Their small groups have selected 2 or 3 discussion questions that will center these discussions.  These discussions are the primary assessment for the unit so they ARE VERY IMPORTANT!

Assignments:

  • Reading their Dystopian Novels (Must be completed by December 18)

  • Completing Weekly Dystopian Assignment (in Google Classroom) by Sunday

  • Your scholar needs to be taking notes (Post-Its, Notebooks, etc) as they read.

Questions to ask:

  • When you meet with your group to discuss your book, what do you and they like to talk about?

  • What’s a subject, and what’s a predicate? Can you show me how you identify them? Why is this important to know?

Geography

(Stoller)

We continue our studies of Africa and students have a map quiz to complete when they have created their own political and physical map of the continent.  We hope to have a guest speaker from Liberia this week and learn about South Africa next week!  Students will be doing another short writing assignment this week and we are sometimes struggling with plagiarism.  Please help your learner know that they cannot simply copy and paste large chunks of text when writing for school.  As a reminder, students need to complete 3 current event assignments successfully; 4 have been offered thus far and 3 more will be offered.

Questions to ask:

  • What country did you learn about on the CIA Factbook?

  • Why do we use that particular website for our learning about individual countries?

  • What did your country have in common with the USA?

  • What was different about your country from the USA?

  • What did you learn about Liberia from the guest speaker?
