A few announcements:
English - Ripp
We started our final round of choose your own learning, it is exciting to see what the students are immersing themselves in. I am here to support in any way I can, so let me know if your learner needs a virtual check-in for any reason.
Deadlines:
The final round of choose your own learning is May 29th
Questions to ask:
Have you started your work for the final round - all units have daily work attached to them.
What are you reading - do you need more books?
What have you learned so far in your final round?
Do you have any of Mrs. Ripp’s books that will need to be returned? You can drop them off at school when you go back to get your things or at her house in Fitchburg.
English (Gunst):
We are now entering the 2nd week of your student's final Choose Your Own Adventure. I will be scheduling a meeting with each student to check-in and provide help with their project. Remind your student, that I provide guidance every day on what they should be getting done so they don't fall behind. You should ask your student what Adventure did they choose and have them explain the assignment to you.
Stoller (Geography): A brief overview of the continent of Africa is coming next week. Students will explore the cultural, physical and political features. Questions to ask:*What are 3 physical features in Africa?
*What are 5 new countries that you had never heard of?
*What surprised you in your learning about Africa?
*Which version of the song is your favorite and why?
*Can you show me the map game and let's play together!

We are completing our unit on reading key signatures this week with minor keys and the circle of 5ths. It has been really exciting to see the amazing growth our students have made in this facet of their musicianship. Strengthening this knowledge helps musicians to improve their literacy and to build on more advanced music theory moving forward. In one of the YouTube videos students watched to gain strategies, reading key signatures was described as a musician's "rite of passage". So true!
Most students have turned in their performance assessment for the quarter and what joy it brings me to hear them play. Scales have never sounded so good!
This week's assignments include a short reflection on "Spring" as a theme in music composition and beginning the process of choosing a focus for final projects (there are over 20 choices).
The final project assignment will be our focus for the remainder of this school year with weekly check ins and goal sheets to guide our work and manage work time. I hope students will reach out to me and schedule brief conferences along the way if they have questions or need guidance. The final project will address at least one if not multiple state and national standards for music (perform, create, respond, connect). The goal of this project is to give students freedom to use their skills and knowledge as musicians to dive deeply into learning more about a specific subject, interest, or area of focus.
Questions to ask:
Do you feel more comfortable determining key signatures in music now than you did 6 weeks ago?
How does knowing the key of a piece of music help you as a musician?
What is the circle of 5ths?
What is the most interesting thing you learned about Vivaldi's Four Seasons "Spring" Concerto?
What do you think you might do for your final project in Orchestra?

May 11 - 14: we have been continuing our work on writing our own stories using the verb chart we created together. By Friday they need to have a character (or two), a character description, what the characters wants but doesn't have, and where the character goes to solve the problem. The other task we do at the end of each week is a cultural comparison with products, practices and perspectives.
May 18 - 21: completed rough draft is due May 18. I will give last-minute editing suggestions, and the final copy is due on May 21. We will also do one culture task that week.
All assignments are posted in Google classroom.
