It's the start of 3rd quarter and it's a good time to replenish supplies if needed. Students are running low on pencils and some need new binders or folders. It would be helpful if you asked your student if he/she needs additional supplies. The team would be happy to take donations of a box or two of kleenex if you are willing!
Geography (Stoller): Students continued their in depth study of various forms of government. We learned about Direct Democracy, Representative Democracy (both presidential and parliamentary), Oligarchy, Dictatorship, and Monarchy. Next week, students will make an argument for which government is the ideal form for a newly formed country. There will be a persuasive writing assignment throughout the week, much of which will be done in class. Mr. Van Hout has taken over teaching the class and has been a welcome addition to our community! He will be with us for the duration of 3rd quarter.
English (Ripp): We had stations two days where we discussed how to interpret questions based on central ideas or themes. Students also discussed their books and the end of book clubs project was revealed. Book orders came in with more than 60 new books added to our library. Thank you so much to all of those who ordered, research says that there is 50 to 60% more reading in schools that have well-stocked classroom libraries, even when they have an amazing library like we do.
Next week , we will have stations Monday through Thursday and then have a picture book showcase on Friday as well as an extended read aloud. Some classes started our new read aloud The Crossover by Kwame Alexander, it just won the Newbery award Monday. Finally, we did our #studentlife challenge Thursday with students in Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada showcasing their daily lives. I cannot wait to share more pictures with the students.
FACE- This week in FACE we are focusing on kitchen safety and sanitation. The students will have a post-test on Wednesday, they are required to achieve a 3 or higher before being able to cook in the Labs. Make sure they are studying and doing what they need to be able to cook in class.
Math (Stauss):
During math this week, students learned about visual equations involving coins and pouches and how to solve them. Towards the end of the week we began to change those visual equations into normal equations involving the variable x. Next week we will continue to work on solving equations as well as beginning to learn about how to find the slope of a line and what that slope means.
