Newsletter February 13th, 2015

Another fantastic week of learning here in the shark tank.  Students are busy preparing for their Student Led Conferences to be held April 16th and 21st, as well having great discussions about Cyber Bullying and how to make others feel great.

Math (Stauss)
During math class this week, students continued to practice solving equations, and they were introduced to the basics of slope.  Next week we will work more with slope and begin to review for our unit test on our Moving Straight Ahead math book.  Our test will be on February 24th.

Geography (Stoller/Van Hout)
The last three days students have been writing their essay for their Governments of the World summative. For Monday students will need to have a finished draft ready for a final edit. Final drafts will be turned-in at the end of class Monday.

Tuesday we will begin a new unit on Africa. Students will discuss what they already know about Africa and we will do an activity focusing on where our ideas of Africa come from. Students will also receive a map assignment on that day. During the rest of the week we will do an activity that explores European colonization of Africa and what the lasting effects of colonization are. This would be a great topic to discuss with your child!

English - Ripp
There is never a dull moment in English, it seems, with more exciting ways to learn every week.  This week we spent time discussing writing and how to re-ignite our passion for it.  Thursday's have now been dedicated to writing, as students need to show mastery of standard 5 and 8 before March 26th.    We also spent time working on our book clubs, as well as read a lot.  We have revamped our stations schedule, with stations now happening Monday through Wednesday, having a full day dedicated to writing Thursday, and a full day dedicated to reading on Fridays.

Next week Friday students will take unit 8 vocabulary quiz and retakes will end for quiz 7 the same day.  We will continue our exploration of poetry as we discuss theme and how to support our opinions using text evidence.  Book clubs are wrapping up, which means students will start to work on their book club final projects as well.  More information has been posted on mrsripp.com
