Today was our 2nd quarter CARE trip and we had a great time bowling! We have just started a new quarter and students all begin with a clean slate. We encourage them to use their planners and to make regular (at least weekly) checks of grades on IC to monitor their progress. Don't forget that students have 2 weeks following a summative to do a retake if he/she wishes to do so. We also encourage students to fully complete all formative work so they are ready the first time for a summative. We look forward to taking every student on our 3rd quarter CARE trip to the Stoughton Cinema!
All Ripp English students will post their blog posts on Wednesday detailing what a typical day in their lives look like. We have 30 schools in 6 different countries who will be showcasing their days as well. I cannot wait to see what the students learn and discuss from this experience.
Geography (Stoller/Van Hout): Students finished up their study of 5 world religions. It was interesting to hear from students of different faith backgrounds and have them share their experiences. Students took a quiz on some basic religion concepts today and answered the question "Why does this matter?" Feel free to follow up with your student if you have not already talked about this unit at home. Next week, Mr. Van Hout will begin lead teaching in all classes. Governments of the World. We will begin the unit by discussing what we already know about what a government is, the role of government and what types of governments we may already be familiar with. Next, students will begin exploring different government systems seen throughout the world. A couple of the essential questions we will explore during the unit include: “How do different government types affect the daily lives of citizens?” and “Is there an ideal type of government? If so, what is it?”.
FACE- The Sharks are back in FACE. We will be focusing on kitchen skills this quarter. We are starting this week getting everyone familiar with common terms and techniques used.
English (Ripp): We had an exciting week in English where we started our stations rotations. Students rotate through 6 different stations that include independent reading, book club discussions, mini-lessons with me, as well as writing, grammar and vocabulary. The 14 minutes stations offer me a chance to challenge students at each of their levels and providing on-target instruction for all of them. Book clubs have also started with students self-selecting a book of their choice, determining their reading pace, and leading their own discussions. I am hoping this provides them with a chance at a deeper reading conversation which will push them to think deeper about text. 3rd quarter will provide a focus on reading, poetry and narrative writing. I am excited to see what teh students will create.
