Newsletter, March 19th

As you saw, this week we announced that our schedule will change starting on April 12th to allow for more instructional time.  Please make sure to request any changes to your scholar’s instructional model by this Sunday per the email sent from the district on Wednesday evening.  We are excited to be able to be with scholars more.  To see more information, please go to this link.

Next week marks the end of the 3rd quarter.  It’s hard to believe we are that far into the school year.   This is a great time to look over IC with your student so that the report card won’t have any surprises.  Remember, IC is the gradebook and Google Classroom is simply how we share the work with students.  We are grateful for your help and support at home as we work to help your learner explore, learn and grow all year long.

We are saying goodbye to our wonderful student teacher, Ms. Weber, before spring break as they head to Evansville high school to continue their student teaching.  We are grateful for all of the care and energy they have put into the work with our scholars.

We are winding down with TED talks with students’ first draft being due next Friday before spring break.  We would love for scholars to be able to go into spring break with space to relax and perhaps even read a book.

  • Module 9 - due today, Friday, March 19th

  • Module 10 - due Wednesday, March 24th

  • First draft of TED talk due 3/26

We continue to move forward on our TED Talk project.  As a class, we have developed research skills and tested our sources for bias and reliability.  This week your student has been taking notes and developing three main ideas of their TED Talk.  By the end of this week, your student will be writing the script for their TED Talk that will be due the Friday before Spring Break.

Their five minute presentation will be due after Spring Break.  Please continue to help your student read their Independent Reading Book for 20 minutes a night.

We are saying goodbye to our student teacher, Ms. Weber. During 4th quarter they will be continuing their student teaching experience at Evansville High School.

Geography

(Stoller)

We continue to work on the topic of Tourism, its pros and cons and asking the question ‘What should individuals, businesses or governments do regarding tourism?’  It’s a really broad question and the idea is for them to make a claim based on the reading they have done and then support it with evidence from the readings.  I am noticing that this is a really difficult skill for them so we will continue to work on it next quarter with another question.

Questions:

*What is your claim about tourism?

*What is ecotourism vs tourism?

*Are both of your Asia maps and your India map have a score of at least a 2?  If so, have you done your map quiz?  If not, what is your plan to get those done so that you can submit and then take the map quiz?

* What did you learn about 2 important tourist sites in China?  What were the two and what was unique about them?
