English (Ripp) | We finished book clubs this week, I saw so much growth in their virtual discussion for many, it was fascinating to also discuss whether or not we live in a dystopia already, I hope your scholar enjoyed this unit . We will focus next on creative writing when we come back in January. If your scholar needs books for over break, please reach out, we will gladly get many books your way.
Deadlines: Questions to ask: Do you have late work or work that needs to be re-taken in English? How did you grow as a thinker/conversationalist through your book club discussions? Did you like your book club book? What are your reading plans over break? What is your 3rd reading goal? Are we living in a dystopia now?

English (Gunst) | We are finishing up our Dystopian unit this week - this will be the last major assignment of 2020. Students have been working on their assignments as well as meeting with me in small discussion groups. We have been looking at the question, “Are we living in a dystopian society?” to explore similarities and differences between the world we live in and the worlds they are reading about.
After break, we will be focusing on developing writing skills by exploring different types of writing. Please continue to make sure that your child is reading 20 minutes a day. This is also an excellent time to catch up on missing assignments. |
Enriched English (Darken) | Deadlines:
Questions to ask: Are you thinking about participating in the spelling bee? Are you thinking about submitting some work to Yahara? How is your essay writing going?

Geography (Stoller) | We are wrapping up our investigation on South Africa, Apartheid and Nelson Mandela. Students were given resources to guide their learning and were sharing with their small groups. We have found that even with laying out deadlines along the way, students are not completing the ‘stair steps’ to the project because they see it all due down the road. We are working on helping them understand time management and breaking larger projects into chunks. That project was due today (Friday, December 18). We will have guest speakers from Egypt on Monday and Tuesday in class.
Questions to ask: *What did you learn about Nelson Mandela? *How is Apartheid similar to segregation in the USA? *How did Mandela use rugby to try to help the healing process for South Africa? *What are some things you learned about Egypt from the guest speakers? |
