Newsletter January 31st, 2020

We are in a groove of learning - now is a great time to ask your learner how well they are engaging in class?  Are they asking questions? Using their time well? Taking risks in order to grow? How are they treating their peers?  The staff at school?

Thank you to all who were able to donate snacks to our Caldecott celebration, it was great fun to celebrate books and reading with all of the students.

We are in the middle of our TED talk unit, this will consist of modules for students to work through in order to fit their need in pace.  There are short lessons every day and then a lot of work time most days. This is a great time of year for students to show their independence and time management skills.  All modules are in Classroom, if you need an invitation into Classroom please let me know.

Questions to ask:
  • Who won the Caldecott Medal?
  • Which parts of your social identity hold power?
  • Who is Naomi Wadler and what does she care about?
  • What is your claim for your TED talk?

Our first quiz of the Unit is next Tuesday/Wednesday (4th and 5th). It will be on Agreement (GG-A from Unit 3). Students are welcome to email any questions to me, study their link from their slideshow as well as look through their notes in order to prepare. Gracias!

Geography (Stoller):
We continue to explore the religions of the world and how belief systems can affect cultures and conflict.  Students will be completing Middle East maps next week and use them to take a map quiz. They are never required to memorize a map but need to create one that they can read.  Ask your learner:
*What are the requirements for your Middle East maps?  Can I see the rubric?
*What do the 'Big 3' religions have in common?
*What makes Buddhism unique?
*What makes Hinduism unique?
