December means we are out of Kleenex. If you feel like donating a box or two to help with all of the runny noises in the Shark tank, that would be much appreciated. Thank you also to all of those who donated to the OMS holiday challenge, we believe we met the goal!
Next week is very busy for our students with quizzes, assignments and projects wrapping up. While we try to get as much as possible on our calendar, we are not always informed of upcoming deadlines. Please make sure your learner is staying on top of all deadlines.
Shark week is next as well. Dress up days are as follow: Monday is PJ day, Tuesday is Ugly holiday sweater day, Wednesday is spiffy shark day (dress in your finest), and Thursday is team t-shirt or dress like a shark day.

The last two weeks were emotional and profound as we engaged in meaningful conversation about how to prevent suicide in middle school. The students had many questions and also many ideas for what we can do to bring the numbers down. Right now more middle school aged kids die through suicide than car accidents! Students worked on either a summary of an article or an opinion piece to wrap up our unit, this is due Monday. Next week we slow down, read aloud, and start to think about our next speech - how to presentations!
Ask your child about:
What are things that stood out to them in the suicide unit?
How are they dealing with the pressure of middle school?
How did they do on the best draft of their short story assignment? (Reminder, that all stories will be revised/edited in class after break).
What are their reading plans for this snowy and cold weekend?
Geography (Stoller):
This previous week we began our exploration of world religions in the Middle East. We started with Judaism and moved on to Christianity. Ask your student for some similarities between the two. There is a lot to compare and contrast. We will wrap up this Friday with a scavenger hunt on Islam.
Next week we are planning on continuing learning about Islam and we will compare and contrast Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. We will have a quiz on these three religions next Wednesday.
Learning about different religions is very important in our modern world. Ask your student some reasons why it is important.
