Dear Parents/Guardians~
On Tuesday, October 21, the 7-O Sharks will be heading to downtown Madison for an Urban Challenge. For this ‘Amazing Race’ style activity, students will be placed in teams of 8 and have an adult chaperone with their team all day. Your child's team will focus on the district goal of asset building. 40 developmental assets have been identified that influence a young person's life. These assets are considered building blocks of development that help young people grow up to be healthy, caring, and responsible adults. The main assets on which the team will concentrate are building a caring school climate, interpersonal competence, and planning and decision-making. We will focus on team building, communication, problem solving, leadership skills, building peer relations, and nurturing positive values. We will continue to practice these skills throughout the year in these teams.
The day prior to the trip, teams will receive a list of challenge sites, a map of downtown and a Madison Metro ride guide to help them plan out their day. There will be more than 30 sites where teams can go to complete a challenge, thus earning them CARE cash for their team. Teams will have to ride the city bus at least once during the day; some teams may ride more often depending on their strategy for earning the most points.
All students will receive a team t-shirt that they should wear that day. They will also decide on a unifying piece to add (blue hats, red bandanas, etc). Students should all wear tennis shoes. Teams will decide whether they are going to bring sack lunches or bring money to stop somewhere along the way. If students want to order a school sack lunch, they should complete the order form offered during the planning day. Students may bring their devices (phones, ipods, etc) but they are responsible for their own device. We will go rain or shine, so if the weather looks iffy, rain coats or umbrellas would be advised.
Cost for the trip is $25. This covers the cost of a red 7-O Shark t-shirt, transportation to and from Madison, transportation on the Madison Metro, supplies for the challenges, and admission fees. Checks can be made out to OMS.
We are also in need of parents to help chaperone the trip. We would especially love to have parents with us both Tuesday for the challenge day and Wednesday, Oct 22 for our debrief day. Processing/debriefing what happens during the challenge will be equally important for students. If you are available one or both days, please indicate below.
