Newsletter September 5th

What a wonderful first week of school we have had, in fact, it has been quite shark-tastic!  We have been impressed with the eagerness of the students, as well as how quickly they are figuring out the new routines and expectations.  Now we really look forward to getting to know your child better as well as digging into the amazing learning that happens in 7th grade.

Each week we will try to provide you with a brief overview of what is happening in the various classes.  We hope you find this useful as you discuss the week with your child  We also hope you take a moment to look around our blog.  It has staff emails, staff website links, as well as a up-to-date Google calendar with big projects or events on it.  The blog can be found here - you can easily subscribe to it by signing up on the right side, which will then shoot you an email when the blog is updated.

Students got a lot of information about team policies, etc this week. We will continue to teach expectations and discuss how things work in Hawaii 7-O in the next few weeks. There will be handouts coming home with them and some will need to be returned. One of them, the parent information sheet, went home in Science class. We ask that parents/guardians take a few minutes to tell us about your child. The sheet is double sided so that we can get more than one
perspective on a child. If you need additional sheets, we can email or send them

home. Thanks for your help in getting to know our students!

We hope to see all of you at back to school night this coming Monday!

Mrs. Stoller's Geography:
This was a great week to get to know one another!  Students took a pre-assessment so I could get an idea of what skills and knowledge already exist and where we need to focus our learning.   The first summative assessment, creating a Dream Classroom was explained today and is due nextWednesday, September 10.  Ask your child what makes his/her classroom so special!  Atlas orders are due next Friday, September 12 for anyone interested.  Next week, students will have a geography syllabus to bring home and have signed.  Students will also be signing up to present a current event one time this quarter and may be scheduled as early as next week.  Feel free to ask your student the date that he/she has to present!  Finally, we will be taking some time to discuss the events of 9-11. Your student will likely be coming to you to ask some questions about your recollection of that day.  It’s the first of many tough topics and issues we address as part of our study of the world.

Mrs. Van's science:
Our first unit is the Nature of Science.  We'll be looking at how scientists work, how observations are different than inferences, how scientific knowledge is revised, and how to set up experiments. This unit sets the stage for the rest of the year. The 7-0 student sharks need a composition notebook for class. This will be used to create our own science textbook since we don't have one.

Several information papers were sent home on Thursday.  If you haven't seen them, please ask your student for them.  The parent information sheet allows you to share information about your student with us.  Since you know them best, we are looking forward to your insights.  The CARE Activity sheet explains the dates and the criteria for attending the events throughout the year.  The last page shares the 7-0 team expectations and has a tear off section at the end that needs to be returned with your signature.  7-0 is looking forward to a "fin-tastic" year!

Advanced English with Mrs. Westrich:

I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know the students in 7th Grade Advanced English!  This week, students wrote a draft of an autobiography to help me get to know them as people, writers and students. Please contact me at alwestrich@oregonsd.net if there is additional information you would like for me to know about your child (learning style, talents, etc.).  You will find more information about the class, updates and assignments on the class website: https://sites.google.com/a/oregonsd.net/7th-grade-advanced-english---westrich/.  Feel free to contact me at any time!

Looking forward: Next week, students will turn in a final draft of their autobiography and begin learning and implementing processes included in our weekly schedule.  The schedule can be found on the class website.

Mrs. Ripp's English:
We have had a wonderful week with students setting up expectations and rules for the classroom, as well as figuring out how to best check out books in our classroom library.  It has been exciting to see so many students find books to read.  We have also started our paper blogs which will lead to our actual blogs starting next week.  They can be seen at www.kidblog.org/mrsrippsclass/

Coming up next week, we will start blogging, we will also start small group and one-on-one conferring to set up reading and writing goals for the year.  Each child is being challenged to read at least 25 books, see more info about that on our website www.mrsripp.com

Mrs. Cox's FACE:
FACE- This week the new 7th graders have been getting to know me and what we will learn in class. We are starting our first unit, Communication, and have a lot of fun activities for them to do.

Mr. Krueger's Math:
Next week in math-8 we will be reviewing important information from last year's material.  Specifically, we will look at solving linear equations, linear relationships, and computing slope and y-intercept.  Upon completion of this review we will begin our first book in the curriculum, Thinking With Mathematical Models, which deals with linear and inverse relationships.
