Another phenomenal week has passed in the shark tank. The students have been adjusting well to the life of middle school and making us all proud. Thank you also to all who made it to Back to School Night, it is wonderful to get to meet you!
Next week is spirit week in time for homecoming. Students are encouraged to get in the spirit by dressing up:
Monday - Disney or Super hero
Tuesday - Twin Tuesday
Wednesday - Team color/animal
Thursday - 70's or 80's day
Friday - Orange/black day
Don't forget, you can sign up to be a volunteer for the Urban Challenge here
Also, consider joining the OSD team for the Literacy Run, more information can be found here
We have posted several new items on our Google calendar, as well as on our blog. We hope you find it useful for staying in the loop.

Mr. Krueger's Math:
Next week in math-8 we will be exploring data patterns, along with linear models. Specifically, we will look at patterns that occur with bridge thickness, bridge length, and bridge strength. Toward the end of the week we will explore how to model linear data patterns.
Please make sure that the correct materials are always being brought to class (pencil, notebook, binder/folder, dry erase marker (if one can be brought), calculator, and the unit book). Also, please email me with any questions you may have.
Thank you,
Bryan
Ms. Stoller's Geography:
Students had a great discussion about 9/11 on Thursday with Ms. Schwartzstein, our substitute for the day. We could never have students fully understand all that happened that day, all the changes the followed or the emotions many of us felt. I hope the conversations you had at home also helped students to have some insight into the importance of that day. Next week, we will finish up some 'start of the year' business like learning how things work in middle school, going over our syllabus for the year (which will require a parent signature) and discussing and deciding upon our class expectations. At the end of the week, we'll dive into our first Geography unit, the 5 Themes of Geography. There will be homework next Thursday and Friday but short assignments.
Ms. Stauss' Math:
In math class this week, we learned how to differentiate between shapes that are polygons and shapes that are not polygons. We also reviewed how to measure and draw angles as well as create identical triangles based upon given side lengths and angle measures. Next week we will learn about the interior angle sum of polygons as well as the relationship between exterior and interior angles. On Thursday we will review for our math quiz on Friday.
Mrs. Van's Science:
Science was full of activities this week. The students created a graph using the data collected from the scientist drawings. Since many student's graphing skills were a little bit rusty, we revisited how to best represent information in a graph. In another team activity, students used data to figure out who killed Mr. Xavier. The groups then shared the evidence that supported their team's claim. There were lots of great solutions! We also continued our work on making observations and inferences.
On Tuesday, September 16th, students will take the first quiz of the year. Students will be asked to create a graph, make observations and inferences, and describe some stereotypes of scientists.

Mrs. Westrich's English:
It's been a great week in English! Please check the class website for more detailed updates.
Thank you! As always, feel free to get in touch any time! :)
Mrs. Ripp's English:
Our blogs are live and getting comments! If you haven't checked them out, please go here. We have started our readers workshop as well with small group conferencing, partner conversations, as well as goal setting. A big push in here is for students to become reflective and take charge of their journey as learners, it is wonderful to see this start. It has been amazing hearing the students thoughts so far and seeing them recommend books to classmates and me.
Book orders are due this Wednesday, there are great new books to order! To see how to do it, go here.
Also, I made the decision to cancel our visit/video making from Microsoft. I felt it was an unnecessary distraction. There will be other cool extra opportunities to show the fantastic OMS students later in the year.
