7O Weekly Update

May 23, 2014

Team Notes:  We have TWO weeks left of school, and the kids are getting excited! There are still important summatives left to complete this quarter, so please check Infinite Campus to help your student stay caught up on work.

THANK YOU to all of the parents who have donated or found donations through companies to our CARE auction! We are still accepting donations (sporting equipment, pro/Oregon clothing, gift cards to favorite stores and restaurants, 'toys', lotions/soaps/etc, large candy bags/items, and soda)! Contact Tiffany Totzke Brian (tntotzke@oregonsd.net) with questions or donations.

English (Totzke):  This week we had our final vocabulary quiz, Unit 10. Please encourage your student to check his or her grade on IC and retake any scores 2 and lower. We also wrote our This I Believe essays, which are due Tuesday. Ask your student to read their essay! I've been very impressed with the ideas the students are coming up with. You can find more examples on thisibelieve.org. Happy Reading!

Geography (Vruwink for Stoller):  Students continued to travel throughout Europe this week as they listened to Europe Tour presentations! Let's see...This week we visited Ireland, Portugal, Norway, Spain, Poland and Greece! Our Europe travels ended on Wednesday, but no one was disappointed as we flew to Australia! Thursday and Friday students took notes as they followed along during an introductory Australia presentation.

Geography (Howe):

Math (Stauss): During math this week, we learned how to find the mean, median, mode, range, IQR and MAD for a specific set of data.  We also used these measures to analyze sets of data.  This past Friday we had a quiz on the first four lessons of the unit.  This coming week students will learn how to successfully choose a sample of data that accurately represents a population.  Also, students only have about a week and a half remaining to complete corrections on their summatives before the end of the quarter, so please encourage them to do so!

Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post

Science (Rockwell for vanSteenderen):  Natural Selection continues to be our unit of study. This week, students 'played' with evolution through a peppered moth lab, simulating an event that actually happened during the Industrial Evolution. In short, the peppered moth population changed from a mostly light-colored species to a mostly dark-colored species. Students needed dig through information provided them to figure out why. Today, we analyzed the geologic time scale, which describes the order and duration of major events on Earth for the last 4 1⁄2 billion years! Some examples of events listed on the geologic time scale include the first appearance of plant life on Earth, the first appearance of animals on Earth, the formation of Earth's mountains, and the extinction of the dinosaurs.
