Team Notes: We are continuing to prepare for our end of the year auction. Students have been earning ‘Care Cash’ all year long for being outstanding students and citizens of Team 7-O. They have had the opportunity to bid on certain items a couple of times this year during silent auctions. During the last week of school, we gather for a large auction where everyone walks away with at least one prize if they have saved at least $100 over the course of the year. It’s usually a favorite among students when they leave 7th grade. In the past, prizes have included sporting equipment, pro/Oregon clothing, gift cards to favorite stores and restaurants, ‘toys’, lotions/soaps/etc, large candy bags/items, and soda. If you would like to donate any items for this event, we would be grateful. You can send in items with your student or contact Ms. Brian (Totzke) directly with questions or to arrange drop off. Thank you for your continued help and support of our reward programs.
Also, please note we do not have school next Friday, April 18.
English (Totzke): This week in English we have been studying persuasion and the elements of persuasion, specifically evidence. We’ve analyzed evidence and talked about what makes evidence a safe starting point or not. We finished the week by choosing a claim to defend in our persuasive speeches. Next week, we will have time with Chromebooks to research evidence for our claims.

Geography (Vruwink for Stoller): Students spent half the week looking at both the physical and political maps of Europe. Specifically, we took a more in-depth look at some of Europe's most well-known physical features, including the continent's various 'peninsulas.' Completed maps are essential next week, as students will be taking a map quiz. At the end of the week, students chose individual countries to research using the CIA World Factbook website. Students were responsible for learning about everything from their country's population to their literacy rate to their top exports. Next week, we'll dive into what democracy and communism look like in Europe.
Geography (Howe):
Math (Stauss): During math this week we learned how to apply finding the surface area and volume to three-dimensional shapes different than a rectangular prism. We also completed two activities where students had to make their own 2D and 3D shapes and find their perimeter, area, surface area and/or volume. Next Tuesday students will have a quiz on the first half of our unit Filling and Wrapping. Test corrections for our What Do You Expect unit test also need to be completed by Tuesday.
Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post
Science (Rockwell for vanSteenderen): The value of studying genetics is in understanding how we can predict the likelihood of inheriting particular traits. One of the easiest ways to calculate the mathematical probability of inheriting a specific trait is through the use of Punnett squares. Basically, a Punnett square is a chart which shows/predicts all the possible gene combinations in a cross of parents (whose genes are known). Using Punnett squares, students have practiced predicting the genotypes and phenotypes (dominant vs. recessive) of the offspring of a cross between both homozygous (purebred) and heterozygous (hybrid) parents. (Trust us, it's not as confusing as it sounds!) Take a look at this quick video if you'd like to learn, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_pl5lcSUFg.
Science (Howe):
Tech Tools (Shumaker): Welcome back to Tech Tools 7O students. Did you know that your student has a discoveryeducation.com account provided by Oregon School District? Your student can access videos, images, etc. for free! We are starting the quarter by learning about movie editing and editable clips from discovery education. Students made a practice movie last week and they are starting their summative moviemaker project. They need to include an editable clip from discovery, images, facts, transitions, citations, and music on their video. Some students are choosing to make an informational video to share with an elementary teacher!
The summative moviemaker is due today. Students have to work on it at school. We are having a guest speaker from Radiant Fabrication. He will be speaking about 3D printing and students will get to try making something from that company's software. They will see a 3D printer/scanner in action!
