7O Weekly Update

April 4, 2014

I apologize for the delayed weekly email! Better late than never, right? J

Team Notes: We are beginning to prepare for our end of the year auction.  Students have been earning ‘Care Cash’ all year long for being outstanding students and citizens of Team 7-O.  They have had the opportunity to bid on certain items a couple of times this year during silent auctions.  During the last week of school, we gather for a large auction where everyone walks away with at least one prize if they have saved at least $100 over the course of the year.  It’s usually a favorite among students when they leave 7th grade.  In the past, prizes have included sporting equipment, pro/Oregon clothing, gift cards to favorite stores and restaurants, ‘toys’, lotions/soaps/etc, large candy bags/items, and soda.  If you would like to donate any items for this event, we would be grateful.  You can send in items with your student or contact Ms. Brian (Totzke) directly with questions or to arrange drop off.  Thank you for your continued help and support of our reward programs.

English (Totzke):  This week we had a vocabulary unit quiz on Friday. Please encourage your student to retake the quiz if their score was a 2 or lower. We have two more vocabulary quizzes this year, which is very exciting for the kids to hear! We also began our persuasive unit by exploring arguments using the Toulmin method of persuasion (claim, evidence, backing, counterargument, and response). The students have had fun analyzing advertisements and minute mysteries to find the claims, evidence, and backing. We continue persuasion next week. We also begin our outside reading requirement for the 4th quarter on Monday, so encourage your student to read during their free time.

Geography (Vruwink for Stoller):  Welcome back! Students studied the different types of government in Geography this week - Autocracy, Dictatorship, Oligarchy, Monarchy and Democracy. Through various presentations, activities and a 'Starvinland' simulation (students had to take a 3rd world African nation and come up with a way to make it into a developing nation), students have been able to discuss the similarities and differences between the types. Next week, we'll move into our study of Europe.

Geography (Howe):  This past week has been spent investigating the genocide in Darfur, and the repercussions that have occurred as a result. This is our last mini-unit in Africa before we begin learning about governments of the world and the European continent.

Math (Stauss): During math class this week we began the unit entitled Filling and Wrapping.  The main focus of the unit is to have students learn how to find the surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes.  This week we learned how to find the surface area and volume of a rectangular prism.  As we continue through the unit we will explore other objects including cylinders, cones and spheres.  Test corrections on our last unit, What Do You Expect, are due by April 15th.

Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post

Science (Rockwell for vanSteenderen):  We wrapped up the plant unit in Science this week. Students took the end of unit assessment on Tuesday and then harvested their Brassica plant seeds on Wednesday. They measured the length of their seed pods and took note of how many seeds were actually in the seed pod. We've moved on to a study of genetics. Discussions this week have been about genetic versus environmental traits.

Science (Howe):  During this week students have just cracked the surface on the topic of genetics. Students have learned about genetic and environmental factors and how they play a role in making us who we are, and have begun to look at dominant and recessive traits.
