Weekly Update Feb 14

February 14, 2014

Team Notes: Just a reminder: we have school on Monday due to the days called off for the cold weather! Also, if your student hasn’t returned the salmon-colored SLC sign up sheet, please do so ASAP. You will receive your assigned time closer to the week in March. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

English (Totzke):  This week, we finished reading our book club selections and we worked on our summative project: a theme park based on the book. The models of the theme parks are due Monday, so it would be nice to check in with your student to see if they are finished! We also took a Unit 6 vocabulary quiz, so your child should check Infinite Campus to see if they need to retake (2 or lower).

Geography (Vruwink for Stoller):  This week, students chose a 'famous African' (Nelson Mandela, Charlize Theron, Samkon Gado, DeSagana Diop, Retief Goosen, Akon, Oscar Pistorius, etc.) to research. They looked at their African's lifetime accomplishments and how he/she has impacted African society and history. Many students surprised themselves with what they already knew about some of these Africans. Students also watched a video on African rainforests - learning about the trees and animals living there. It was amazing to watch, as many of us may never actually be able to visit an African rainforest ourselves. Lastly, students were assigned the 'Flags of Africa' assignment. Students are responsible for researching a particular country's flag - looking specifically for it's historical significance and what the colors and symbols on it represent. We'll share and display these flags next week!

Geography (Howe):  Check website.

Math (Stauss): In math class this week we learned how to identify the slope of a line as well as its y-intercept.  We also learned how to write equations based upon a given line's slope and y-intercept.  On Friday, we went over the answers to the study guide for our test next Tuesday.  Students should be reviewing their notes and working on extra practice worksheets in preparation for the summative over the weekend.  Next week after students have taken the test we will begin our next unit on probability.  Please also take a moment to remind your student to take notes in class and use those notes to help guide them as they complete homework.

Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post

Science (vanSteenderen):  Our Science classes have moved from the excretory system (which is responsible for the elimination of wastes from the body) into the nervous system. Along with learning about the overall function of the system, students are taking a look at the specifics of the central and peripheral nervous systems. In digging deeper, students have since discovered that everything is tied to the brain! We've started to study what each part (cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla oblongata) and lobe of the brain is responsible for. Today, students learned of Phineas Gage. Ask them about what happened to him!

Science (Howe):  Check website.

FACE (Duffy): We have our last Post-Test to get into the kitchen on Friday. Next week, we will be getting ready to start cooking.
