Team Notes: We started out Quarter 3 this week, which means some students started or switched classes. 2nd quarter grades will be posted on Infinite Campus on January 31. If your student has an "IE" for a standard, that means he or she is missing work that prevents the teacher from evaluating whether proficiency has been met. They should complete that work as soon as possible. We will announce a cut-off date for that work in the next week. We are excited for a new, fresh start this quarter!
English (Totzke): We continued reading our book club books, and we are now halfway done! Students had a second (formative) discussion in class today, and the next discussions they have will combine for a summative score. We also worked on asking deep, thought-provoking questions about our books. Students who want to check the reading schedule or reflection topics can find them both on my website:

Geography (Vruwink for Stoller): This week, we started our Africa unit in Geography! Students were given an overview of the continent, specifically being introduced to Africa's geographical and cultural aspects. Students will begin an exploration of Africa next week using the Central Intelligence Agency's World Factbook online. Students also chose a date to present their quarter 3 Current Event. This quarter, students will create a Google Earth Tour to present a news story from a place outside of the US.
Geography (Howe): We end our Asia unit with a look at China and it's impact on the world. Students have been tasked with creating a research presentation of their choice, presented in a manner of their choosing, on a topic of their that choice, that relates to China. We're spending time in the computer lab all this week to get started, and finishing up Monday-Wednesdayof next week. Presentation should be around 5 minutes in length for individuals and 10 minutes in length for groups.
Math (Stauss): In math this week, we took a quiz on the first portion of the unit Moving Straight Ahead. We spent one day before the quiz reviewing math concepts. On Friday of this week, we focused on updating the math potion of our ePortfolios in preparation for student led conferences in March. Next week we will focus on writing and solving equations from real-world problems.
Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post
Science (vanSteenderen): Well, it was a short but exciting week in science. To view the circulatory system in action, students studied Daphnia. Daphnia are small, clear, ectothermic crustaceans. The lab involved determining the effect of cold water, hot water, sugar water, and caffeinated water on their heart rate. Their hearts are located on their backs. We were able to see the carapace - exoskeleton, antenna, jointed legs, and digestive system also. Some classes were able to view baby Daphnia. Other classes saw eggs in the brood chamber of female adults. This is a new lab this year and it was fin-tastic!
Also, a big THANK YOU to all of you who donated plastic soda bottles!
Science (Howe): Our focus this week has been on the structure and function of the circulatory system. In order to better see the inner workings of the system, the students will be observing Daphnia -small crustacean like creatures- as they are introduced to different types of water and stimulants to see if they impact the heart rate of the creature.
