News from 7-O (Nov 22)

November 22, 2013

Team Notes:

Happy Thanksgiving next week!  There is no school Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.  Enjoy the time off!  There will not be a newsletter next week because of the short week.

It was so wonderful to meet so many of you at conferences.  Please know that if you have concerns or would like an update, you can call or email any of us or request a team conference.  We're happy to discuss your child's progress.  Keeping track on Infinite Campus is a great tool for students and parents, as well, when it comes to making sure work is complete and proficient.  We suggest students redo any work that is not a 3.

English (Totzke):  This week, we had 3 days in the computer lab working on our research magazine articles, in addition to the 3 days last week for finding information. Please check with your student on his or her google doc that the article is complete. The article is due Friday, November 22. Next week, we will have a mini-unit on writing thank you notes. Happy Reading!

Tech Tools:

Geography (Stoller):  Students had some lessons in economics this week as we paved the way to understanding how different people, countries, cultures make and spend money and how we are all inter-connected by our economies.  In learning about OPEC, we discussed the critical resource of crude oil and how much of an impact OPEC's decisions have on all of us.  We also had a mini lesson on taxes, what they are and what they do.  Next week, we'll have a mini lesson on physical features.  When we return after Thanksgiving, we'll look at economic systems like Capitalism, Communism and Socialism, comparing and contrasting different economies.   From there, we will begin a unit on world religions where students will have a group project to complete.

Geography (Howe):

Math (Stauss):  At the beginning of this week in math class students completed a test on our last unit Stretching and Shrinking.  The rest of the week we have spent time learning more about ratios and how to compare data found within real-world problems.  We have spent time focusing on identifying part-to-part ratios and part-to-whole ratios as well as turning the latter into percents so we can more easily compare each situation.  Next week we will finish up our first section of the book, and on Tuesday students will take a summative quiz.  Students are aware they may use their notes on this quiz.  For the test we took this week, corrections will be due Friday, December 6th.

Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post

Science (vanStenderen):  The students were pushed a little harder this week when they had to imagine what would would happen to a cell or parts of a cell if one cell structure stopped working normally.  There was a lot of thinking going on in preparation for the presentations.  November 26th students will be taking a test over this material.  Please remind students to complete all retakes before the Thanksgiving Break.

FYI:  Science Olympiad has started.  Meetings are held with Mr. Panietz (an 8th grade science teacher) Mondays after school from 3:15 - 4:30.  Students will compete in local, regional, and hopefully, state meets.  Please contact him for additional information.
