News from 7-O (Nov 1)

November 1, 2013

Team Notes:

It's the end of first quarter and hard to believe that we've been in school for 9 weeks already!  The next nine go equally as quickly and it will be winter break before we know it.  The end of the quarter is a great time to talk to your child about his/her goals for the next quarter and remind your student that everyone starts fresh on Monday.  It's also a good time to replenish pencils if the supply is low.  As we continue through this next grading period, please be sure to let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

We had a great Fun Run this morning with all of our 7-O Sharks and every student at OMS.  Congrats to Hogan Schulz and Nick Borden for placing in the top 3 for 7th grade boys!  Students also had the opportunity to see some of their classmates shine as Rising Stars were awarded at our assembly.

This afternoon, students enjoyed some time as a team, playing games and having fun as part of our 1st quarter CARE activity.  We will have another opportunity like this at the end of January when 2nd quarter ends.  Students remain eligible to participate if they are demonstrating proficiency in all subject areas and making good choices about behavior.  We can't wait to take everyone on our next adventure….the bowling alley!

Great job on WKCE testing this week!  Students who were absent Tuesday or Wednesday mornings will be completing their assessment during test make up in early November.  Thanks for the help and support from home in having students here and ready to go this week!

English (Totzke):  This week was a bit disjointed with WKCE testing and the end of the quarter. However, starting Monday, we jump into our researching unit! This week, we will work on how to research and what to make of what we find, including analyzing the results. Happy Reading!

FACE:  First quarter is coming to a close. It has been wonderful to get to know all of the 7-0 students. We will be finishing up the quarter with an AoD Spoof Ad. I am very excited to see what they come up with. I look forward to third quarter when I will see 7-0 again.

Geography (Stoller):  We were back to latitude and longitude this week and will have our quiz on Tuesday.   We will sign up for 2nd quarter current events and students will each have a date assigned during this quarter.  Infinite Campus will list only the last date of the quarter as the due date but know that if your child misses his/her due date, it will show as missing or late even though the listed due date is in late January.  We will begin our middle east unit next week.

Geography (Howe):  Nearing the end of first quarter also means nearing the end of our map and United States unit. Students created a political map of the United States, as well as used the CIA World Factbook to gather more information about the country in which they live. This knowledge will be tested Thursday during a short quiz on the U.S. map, and will be showcased as part of their Geography Yearbook for quarter one.

Math (Stauss):  While most of our time this week was spent taking WKCEs Tuesday and Wednesday and participating in the Fun Run and KEVA field trip on Friday, we still spent class time in math working on creating similar figures.  Students graphed coordinates to create 'Wumps' and 'Wump imposters'.  They also identified using mathematical terms how the 'Wumps' differed from the imposters.  On Thursday, we also focused on changing an image's size as well as its location as we graphed Mug Wump's hat.

Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post

Science (vanStenderen):  Most groups finished the living vs non-living science investigation this week.  Due to the Urban Challenge and WKCE testing however, our time schedule was cut short.  This grade will go on 2nd Quarter report cards because all presentations haven't been given and many groups want to make improvements in their final product.  The students learned a lot by viewing other presentations and by participating in our discussions.  It's a new learning process and the 7-0 sharks did a good job tackling it.  Way to stick with it!

Science (Howe):  Last week students were given an unknown object and were tasked with creating a plan to determine whether or not the object had once been alive, or if it, in fact, had never been alive. Students worked for three days testing on their unknown objects and created a presentation of their findings, which they delivered Monday. Quarter one will end with us working on our science notebooks, and beginning to look at the discovery of cells and their parts.
