Team Notes:
Urban Challenge is set for Tuesday, October 22. We need your help! If you are willing and able to spend a day, hopefully two, with us, we are looking for chaperones/facilitators. We need several parents to go with a team of 10 students as they navigate downtown Madison in an 'Amazing Race' style adventure. If possible, we'd like for you to join us on Wednesday, October 23 as well to help your team process and de-brief the experience. If you are available one or both days, please email Debe vanStenderen at ddv@oregonsd.net. There will be a parent meeting right before the field trip to lay out exactly what you need to do. (Mostly, you just need to make sure the team is safe and back to the bus pick up location by the appointed time.) Both days would be from approximately 755 AM until 315 PM. We hope you'll consider joining us!
The Oregon School District is interested in your ideas and feedback regarding a possible facilities referendum. There are two sessions next week and we would love to have lots of 7-O parents attend to share their thoughts. The first is Monday, October 7 at the Fitchburg Community Library from 6-8 PM. The other option is Tuesday, October 8 at Oregon High School Library from 6-8 PM. The architects, board members and district administration are all on hand to be part of the discussion. If you have questions, please contact the district office.
English (Totzke): This week, we started work on checking that our pronouns have clear antecedents, and we also analyzed our hardest short story to date: "The Glorious Whitewasher." This is in preparation for our summative short story analysis next week. Some students picked up Scholastic book order catalogs, from which you can order ONLINE or by check given to Ms. Brian before October 18. Happy Reading!

FACE: In FACE we are continuing our Family Unit, but now talking about cultures and families from around the world. The discussions we have had about different cultures and the people who live there have been great. The students seem very engaged and interested in learning about kids around the world. We also have 2 guest speakers this week. Both OMS guidance counselors are presenting in my classes this week. Mr. Foley will be talking to the students about Harassment and Sexual Harassment. Then on Friday, Mrs. Schwenn will be speaking about Grief. Looking ahead, next week the students will be doing a group (in class) project on a culture of their choice. They will be putting together a power point and teaching the other students what they learned.
Geography (Stoller): Students finished up the study of the 5 Themes by turning in their projects, having some time to share what they did, review and take a quiz. Grades for those summative assessments are already on IC. Please log onto the portal to see how your student is doing with that standard. We moved into studying different types of maps. We will have a quiz early next week on that and then move into using latitude and longitude.
Geography (Howe): The week started with the students turning in their 5 Themes projects. The kids worked very hard to complete them, and should be proud of their results. Our map unit was introduced on Tuesday, with the emphasis on the four kinds of maps we'll be using most this year: Political, Physical, Climate, and Road. Students spent two days working in stations practicing reading these different maps. Our next step that we'll begin Monday is to learn about and begin to include latitude and longitude.
Math (Stauss): During this week in math we have spent most of our time working on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. On Wednesday and Thursday we brought together everything we learned and used it to help solve problems involving order of operations. Friday we reviewed all of the concepts taught over the week. Next week we have one more lesson to cover and then we will begin reviewing for our test on Accentuating the Negative. Students will take the test Monday, October 14th. Corrections on the quiz we took last Friday are due Tuesday, October 15th.
Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post
Science (vanStenderen): Well ... in science we had a long week of investigating what designing an experiment involves. Using old wives' tales, student set up an experiment to prove or refute the claim. Initial procedures and sample sizes were missing key ingredients but the students became adept at improving their designs. It was a great learning experience and academic growth was apparent throughout the experience. The students did a wonderful job critiquing each others work without being judgmental or mean. Great job Sharks!! I love the way you are collaborating!! Next week we will be taking our first test over the Nature of Science. The students will have a review sheet by Friday so they may begin preparing.
Science (Howe): We've spent the bulk of the week focusing on the concept of experimental design. Students were tasked with picking a common superstition (ex. chocolate causes zits), and creating a plan on how they would go about proving or disproving that claim. Students created the plans on their own, then teamed up with other students for a peer review. In other news, our first unit is coming to an end, and we'll most likely be having our unit quiz on either Wednesday or Thursday.
