News from 7-O (Sept 16)

September 13

Team Notes:

Don't forget to check out the team blog at http://oms7-osharks.blogspot.com/.  We post daily assignments and other announcements.  Many teachers have class webpages linked from there, as well.

We had a team meeting with students today to go over the last bit of '7-O Shark Stuff'.  This included academic and behavioral expectations as well as information about our quarterly CARE activities.  Some students got this in a class earlier in the year and some parents got the information at Open House.  If you have already read, signed and returned the sheet, no need to do it again. However, if you have not yet seen the 7-O Expectations sheet that is coming home today, please take a look and return the signed last page with your student to school.  If you have questions, please let us know!

Students also have an order form for t-shirts.  We will be collecting money for this at a later time but wanted to place our group order ASAP.  Please help your child determine the appropriate size and return the form as soon as possible.  Thanks!

MAPS Testing will start next week.  Students will be taking these standardized assessments during different classes on different days.  If a student is absent, we will work to get them caught up during study halls.  You can help by ensuring that you student gets a good night's rest each night and has breakfast before coming to school.  Thank you!

English (Totzke):  This week we completed our first vocabulary unit and started practicing a reading difficult text by annotating it! It was pretty tough, but we are going to keep practicing next week. Next week, we will also be MAP testing Thursday and Friday, so be sure your student gets a good breakfast and plenty of rest! The MAP test gives the students and me great information about what they are capable of doing, and of what they need. Happy Reading!

FACE: This week in face we have finished our communication fun with skits. It was great to see how creative the kids got. The skits had to do with an argument, using the verbal, non-verbal, listening, and I-statements. The kids had creative freedom to come up with their own argument. Some of my favorites were: Which grandmother is better, One Direction vs Lady Gaga, and hunting vs farming. We are finishing out this week by starting our Bullying unit.

Geography (Stoller):  What a jaw-some group of Sharks we have!  We continued to get to know a bit about each other and about how things work in our classroom.  Students signed up for a Current Event presentation date; every student will present one current event each quarter.  The due date on IC lists the last day of the quarter as I can only put in one date.  But every student has their own due date based on when they signed up.  They should have it written on the assignment sheet as well as in their planner.  Students also brought home an overview of 7th grade Geography (syllabus) and can earn CARE cash by bringing back the signed portion.  Wednesday was a wonderful day of stories and sharing as we remembered 9-11.  I was really proud of how the students handled those conversations.  Next week, we move into our first big unit, the 5 Themes of Geography.  There will be short assignments each night.

Geography (Howe):  Our second week in Geography has been a busy one. As a class, we've discussed the impact that 9/11 has had on America and on the world. It's an important event, a generation defining moment, and one that has and will shape the world the kids are growing up in, even though many of them were not even a year old when the attacks occurred. We've also begun working on our Dream Classrooms, where the students begin using language designed to introduce them to the 5 Themes of Geography to design their ideal learning space. The Dream Classroom drawings are due Monday, 9/16.

Math (Stauss):  During this past week in math, students have learned about sorting and naming polygons, measuring and drawing angles and triangles, and finding the measure of complementary, supplementary, and vertical angles.  Next week Monday students will complete Maps testing during math, Tuesday will be a review day, and Wednesday they will take a test on everything they have learned since the beginning of school.  There is a slight chance students may not be able to log on to complete Maps testing on Monday.  If this does happen, Maps testing for math would take place Monday, September 23rd instead, and this Monday would be a review day followed by the test on Tuesday.

Math (Krueger): See separate IC email and blog post

Science (van Steenderen):  In science this week we investigated scientists through student drawings, a "real" scientist activity, and a discussion of stereotypes. " What is science?" was also a big topic.  The participation in class has been "shark-tastic"!  Students have also been doing a wonderful job setting up a science notebook and personalizing it.  Next week we will work on making observations and inferences.

Science (Howe):  Week 2- Students shared out their Scientist Drawings and were able to identify common stereotypes. The classes came to the conclusion that anyone of any background can be a scientist. We ended the week taking a look at the differences between observation and inference. Students used these new skills to figure out our inquiry boxes and a murder mystery!
